Cranbrook Kingswood is looking for a collaborative, organized, and enthusiastic Dance Teacher & Director to lead and coordinate the dance programs at the Upper School and Middle School levels. Collaboration within a dynamic Performing Arts department, creation of powerful learning experiences for a globally diverse student body, commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of adolescents through personal relationships, setting a positive tone, and treating students as individuals within the context of a broader community, are all critical components of this position.
This position teaches four classes across two divisions, works collaboratively with other members of the Performing Arts department, and creates choreography for the yearly Musical, Winter and Spring Festivals, and the Evening of Dance. The Dance Teacher & Director also supports and guides student-created works for performance in the Annual Strickland Choreography Competition. This teacher’s advisory and co-curricular commitments are performed at the Upper School. Additionally, it is understood that the successful candidate has a demonstrated commitment to work in an extraordinarily diverse and inclusive community and embrace our enriching residential program.
Cranbrook is a PK-12 school with a vibrant boarding component in grades 9-12, allowing the school to provide teachers with the opportunity to live and work on our architecturally famous 319-acre campus. Often living and working in our residence halls, faculty engage students and support their development as members of a shared community. Eagerness to live among students, and to engage them in the evenings and on the weekends as a part of an exciting residential program, is considered beneficial.
Founded by Detroit philanthropists George and Ellen Booth in 1904, Cranbrook Educational Community is one of the world’s leading centers of education, science, and art. Comprised of a graduate Academy of Art, contemporary Art Museum, Center for Collections and Research, House and Gardens, Institute of Science, and more than 1,600 students attending our Pre-K through 12 independent college preparatory Schools, Cranbrook welcomes thousands of visitors and students to its campus each year. Critics have called Cranbrook “the most enchanted and enchanting setting in America” and in 1989 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The campus is located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, about 20 miles north of downtown Detroit. For more, please visit our website: www.cranbrook.edu, and take an aerial tour of the campus.
This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance or a related field, with a Master’s Degree preferred, and five or more years of experience leading high school dance programs. Enthusiasm for teaching and working with adolescents and excellent communication skills are expected of all teachers. This position also requires a valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Cranbrook offers competitive compensation and benefits that include medical, dental, life insurance, long-term and short-term disability, and retirement programs with employer contribution.
Interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae or résumé, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a statement of educational philosophy in relation to this position, and two or three letters of recommendation with contact information. Please be sure all documents are uploaded at the same time you submit your application.
